World: Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education in Emergencies

Background

Save the Children believe that education is a fundamental component of humanitarian assistance due to its contribution to child survival, to safeguarding gains through continuity in learning, and through the sense of dignity and hope that it can bring. Recognising the need to improve the quality and speed of EiE responses through developing the capacity of implementing personnel, Save the Children developed the Education in Emergencies Training Programme (EiETP) targeting mid-level Education staff to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to plan, implement, and coordinate high quality EiE responses. This 6-month blended programme has already been rolled out in East Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia during 2016 and 2017 with very positive results and a lot of learning.

Save the Children is now teaming up with the University of Geneva to offer the programme as a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS). This will carry 11 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits which amounts to a third of a Masters (and is the equivalent of a PG Cert (UK). The focus for this cycle will be South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka**.**

Structure of the course

The course will begin on 7^th August 2017 and is 9 months in duration.

• August 2017 – January 2018 - Distance learning 1
• February 2018 (location TBC) - Residential face-to-face training (2 weeks, full-time)
• February 2018 – end April 2018 - Distance learning 2

• Mentoring (ongoing)
• Placements (TBC)
• Ongoing assessment and specialist support

Content

The programme is broken down into the following modules:

1. EiE Concepts, Frameworks

2. Cross-cutting Issues

3. Holistic and Integrated Programming

4. Teaching and Learning

5. Support Systems and Sustainability: Parents, Communities and Authorities

6. Programme Design and Implementation

7. Application of Learning (Face-to-face Residential)

8. Reflection and Synthesis

Eligibility

You will:

Ø Be an education professional with at least 5 years’ relevant experience

Ø Have a Bachelor’s degree

Ø Have a good level of written and spoken English

Ø Be working in an education in emergencies project or programme or an education programme in an emergency prone area (rapid or slow onset)

Ø Currently have mid-level education responsibilities which includes some or all of the following areas:

• Conducting needs assessments and analysis

• Proposal development

• Programme design and modification

• Programme management (including of individuals and budgets)

• Monitoring and Evaluation and reporting

N.B. Applications are welcomed from local and international NGOs, Government MoEs and relevant UN Agencies, but please note that the primary focus for this cycle is individuals working in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc.).

3. Submit the completed application, an up to date CV, and a copy of your degree certificate to eie@savethechildren.org.uk by midnight on Friday 23^rd June 2017
4. We will conduct phone/Skype interviews with individuals where additional information is required
5. Successful applicants will be contacted by University of Geneva and registered onto the course

N.B., Places on the programme are limited and therefore we will only select participants who are suited to the level of this training and who are based in priority locations. Successful applicants will need to explain how the training is relevant to their role and how they will be able to directly apply their learning in a programmatic and/or humanitarian context.
